The Dance Studies major is affiliated with the Department of Dance. Established in 2002, it is designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Major, a Jiangxi Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Major, and a Provincial Five-Star Major. It ranks 19th nationally in ShanghaiRanking’s Best Chinese Majors and is rated as an A-level major. The major ranked first in both the comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate majors in Jiangxi universities and the audit and evaluation of undergraduate teaching in Jiangxi Province. The course Modern Dance II was approved as one of the third batch of National First-Class Undergraduate Courses. The Department features climate-controlled professional dance studios and a performance theater, and has established artistic practice bases in collaboration with multiple domestic art troupes.
The Department of Dance adheres to an educational philosophy that integrates comprehensiveness, practicality, and innovation. Upholding the holistic educational mission of “knowledge transmission, ability cultivation, and value shaping”, and relying on the advantages of interdisciplinary integration at Nanchang University, the Department aims to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talent. Graduates are expected to possess a rational knowledge structure, a solid foundation, and strong capabilities in dance research, writing, and practice, enabling them to work in art troupes, educational institutions, cultural organizations, and government agencies.
Core courses include Ballet Fundamentals, Modern Dance, Chinese Ethnic and Folk Dance, Body Rhyme of Chinese Classical Dance, Dance Choreography, Repertoire Practice, and Introduction to Dance.
The Department emphasizes teaching reform and innovation, regularly holding teaching achievement showcases and academic exchange activities. It actively organizes faculty and students to participate in various professional competitions, using competitions to promote teaching and forming distinctive teaching characteristics. This approach inspires students’ passion for dance and enhances their professional skills. Students have won numerous prestigious awards in national-level professional competitions, including the China Dance Lotus Award (China’s highest dance honor), the National College Student Art Exhibition, and the China Top Dancer Growth Plan.
