The Arts Studies major is a first-level master’s discipline comprising three academic research directions: Music & Dance Theory and Creation Research, Fine Arts & Calligraphy Theory and Creation Research, and Drama & Film Aesthetics Research. Based on the principles of postgraduate education and the characteristics of the first-level discipline of art studies, and in accordance with the needs of society for art talents, this program aims to cultivate high-level professionals who are rigorous in their scholarship, have a sound academic style, possess a high level of theoretical knowledge in art studies and a certain level of artistic creation ability, and are competent in art teaching, research and management.
The discipline currently has a faculty of 46 master’s supervisors , including 15 professors, 31 associate professors。There are 35 young and middle-aged teachers with overseas study or visiting backgrounds in Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea, and experts from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States are engaged for long-term teaching. The faculty includes distinguished talents such as one recipient of the Special Allowance of the State Council, one member of the Ministry of Education’s Steering Committee, one member of the National MFA Education Steering Committee Sub-committee, Two teachers concurrently serve as vice chairpersons of provincial-level associations such as the Jiangxi Musicians Association and Dancers Association.In recent years, the program has successfully secured 5 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Fund, 6 projects funded by the National Arts Fund, and 67 provincial-level research projects and 43 provincial teaching reform projects。
The program has established one Provincial Key Research Base (Demonstration) for Culture and Art Science and one Provincial Research Base for Intangible Cultural Heritage, Jiangxi Provincial University Key Liberal Arts Bases such as Gan Opera Culture and Art Center of Nanchang University and Institute of Cultural Resources and Industries of Nanchang University. Students also have won dozens of awards in international and domestic large-scale art performances and competitions, including the Ministry of Education’s National College Student Art Exhibition, the Chinese Music Golden Bell Award, the China Dance Lotus Award, and the Golden Microphone Award.
