Doctoral Program Overview: Arts Management

Time:2026-01-21

Program Name: Arts Management

Code: 1201Z9

Date Approved: December 2016

I. General Overview

The Discipline Arts Management is an emerging interdisciplinary field established by expanding and intersecting the research content of the first-level discipline of Management Science and Engineering (under the category of Management) with first-level disciplines in the Arts (including Art Theory, Music and Dance, Drama and Film, Fine Arts, and Design) as well as Economics (including Industrial Economics, Applied Economics, and Regional Economics). This discipline was founded in response to the national imperative to vigorously develop “Arts” as a disciplinary category and to revitalize the cultural and creative industries. With Art as its academic core, Management as its disciplinary foundation, and Economics as its industrial research support, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary research, knowledge sharing, and the innovation of theories and methods. The primary content of education and research in this new applied discipline encompasses arts creativity and planning, arts production and marketing, arts communication and reception, arts markets and industries, public policy management and practice, and innovation in arts education and management.

As a nascent discipline, Arts Management not only prioritizes the integration of multiple disciplinary categories and the synthesis of diverse theories but also emphasizes the study of the management and operation of artistic activities from the perspectives of management science and economics. As a supporting force for the development of the national cultural industry, the growth, management, and innovation of the arts sector require a comprehensive, scientific, and multidisciplinary talent cultivation system. Consequently, this discipline adopts a management perspective centered on the development of China’s cultural and creative industries to conduct research on the operation and management practices of art-related institutions. This approach has opened new horizons and perspectives in management science research, providing theoretical grounds and strategic recommendations for scientific strategic management and creative innovation within the arts sector.

Research in Arts Management underscores both contemporary relevance and practical application. It closely tracks continuous developments in arts management practice, focusing on the exploration and study of management affairs, phenomena, theories, methods, issues, and laws within public cultural and arts undertakings and the cultural and creative industries. Ultimately, the program aims to provide theoretical foundations and countermeasure suggestions for the strategic management and product innovation of arts institutions.
