Introduction to the Department of Drama, Film and Television

The Department of Drama, Film and Television adheres to a comprehensive educational philosophy that integrates teaching, research, artistic creation, and performance showcases. It aims to cultivate high-level practice-oriented professionals who possess excellent performance skills, an innovative spirit, profound cultural and theoretical literacy, and solid professional knowledge in drama, film, and television. Additionally, the Department offers a specialization in Chinese Tea Arts, training students to master core tea art skills. Graduates are cultivated as versatile professionals capable of cultural planning, publicity, public relations, and tea art service and management.

History and Evolution

· May 4, 2011: The Department of Drama, Film and Television was established, affiliated with the School of Art and Design, Nanchang University.

· September 2019: The Performance major (Chinese Tea Arts track) was launched.

· 2022: The Department became affiliated with the School of Arts, Nanchang University.

Education and Teaching

The Department offers undergraduate majors in Performance, Performance (Chinese Tea Arts), and Directing (in preparation). There are currently over 130 undergraduate students enrolled.

The Department boasts a faculty of 20 full-time and part-time teachers, including 6 with senior professional titles, 2 doctoral supervisors, 6 master’s supervisors, and 14 lecturers. Among them, 5 hold doctoral degrees and 2 have postdoctoral research experience.

The Department features a multi-functional rotunda and a small theater that integrate drama rehearsal, film viewing, TV production, and experimental filmmaking. Equipped with laboratories, broadcasting studios, rehearsal halls, dubbing training rooms, multimedia classrooms, exhibition halls, and digital workstations, the Department provides basic course experiments, professional training, and artistic practice for the complete industrial chain of drama and film products. This includes training in videography, sound recording, content producing, directing, acting, video editing, and broadcast design. The Department also houses a professional tea center integrating teaching, tea tasting, exhibition, and cultural exchange. It is equipped with tea table practice areas, display cabinets, training stations, and a multimedia corner, supporting courses in tea brewing, tea ceremony demonstrations, and tea event planning.

The Department has established cooperative relationships with the Chinese National Academy of Arts, Beijing Film Academy, The Central Academy of Drama, Shanghai Theatre Academy, Nanjing University, Communication University of China, and the Graduate Institute of Filmmaking at Taipei National University of the Arts.

Research and Discipline Development

The Department offers a doctoral program in Arts Management (second-level discipline).

In recent years, the Department has undertaken over 40 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Fund, and provincial social science funds. Faculty members have published over 60 papers in CSSCI journals and Chinese core journals. Many of these articles have been reprinted in full by authoritative publications such as China Social Science Digest and Movie and Television Art (published by Information Center for Social Sciences, RUC). Faculty research outcomes have won the 1st and 3rd Prizes in the 15th Jiangxi Social Science Research Awards, the 3rd Prize in the 16th Jiangxi Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards, and the 3rd Prize in the 6th Jiangxi Educational Science Research Outstanding Achievement Awards.

Exhibitions and Performances

Faculty and student works have won over 20 national and provincial awards, including the 1st Prize in the 12th East China “Six Provinces and One City” Short Drama and Sketch Comedy Contest, the Repertoire Award and the Performance Award at the China Theatre Festival, and two 2nd Prizes in the National College Student Art Exhibition and Performance (Performance Group A), organized by the Ministry of Education. Micro-films produced by faculty and students won the 2nd Prize in the National Legal Micro-Film Competition and were selected among the “Top 20 Micro-Film/TV Works” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In collaboration with the Gan Opera Art Center, the Department has completed several national performances of plays, including The Story of Red Pearl, a project funded by the National Arts Fund.

Faculty and students won the Gold Medal (Individual Group), National Bronze Medal, and Best Talent Award at the 6th Chinese Tea Wonderful Game and the Silver Medal (Team Competition) at the 9th Chinese Tea Wonderful Game.

Furthermore, faculty and students hold more than 10 special showcase performances annually. Graduation plays are performed over 10 times a year on campus and are warmly received by audiences.
